Amritsar — The Akali Dal President Mr. Harchand Singh Longowal, has asserted that his party never supported the concept of either ‘‘extremism or secessionism.”
The Akali chief in a letter in Gurmukhi from the Udaipur jail, where he is detained, added that his party’s policies have always been to fight for its just demands through “peaceful means in accordance with rights granted in a free country within its constitutional framework.”
The proof of the Akali Dal’s peaceful and nonviolent struggle lay in the fact that 2.35 lakh Sikhs courted arrest during the Morcha agitation till June 3 last year and more than 3,000 sacrificed their lives, he added.
The tightly written two page letter which was received by party leaders through a lawyer who met him early this month was shown to pressmen here on Saturday.
