NEW DELHI: The first session of the Tenth Lok Sabha began here Tuesday morning with pro-tem speaker Inherit Gupta swearing in new members elected to the house and at least three candidates filing their nominations for election to the speaker’s post.
Arjun Singh, leader of the house and L K Advani, leader of the opposition, were the first 0 be sworn in after the house observed a brief silence, which is customary for such occasions.
Former Speaker Rabi Ray of Janata Dal, Shivraj Patil of the Congress-I and Jaswant Singh of the BJP Tuesday filed nomination papers for the speakership of the Tenth Lok Sabha.
Ray filed his nomination as a candidate of the National Front Left combine, according to the Lok Sabha secretariat. He relinquished the office of the speaker with the commencement of the first session of the Lok Sabha at 1100 hours.
BJP members shouted “Jai Shriram” (Hail lord Ram) and proceedings began with Gupta signing the speaker’s registrars.
