UNITED NATIONS: India has warned against the United Nations peace keeping activity leading to interference in internal and domestic affairs of any country and asserted that it should be undertaken only with the express consent of the host nation.
Indian ambassador to the UN C.R Gharekhan told the special committee on peace-keeping operations Thursday that India supports the peace keeping role of the world body. But at the same time he stressed the “bedrock requirements” that such operations must be carried out with “due respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity” of the country or countries concerned.
This principle needs to be stressed in View of recent world-wide events and the possibility of increasing UN commitments in the future he said.
Referring to the urgency of finalizing asset of guidelines for such operations the Indian ambassador cautioned against too rigid a codification or an elaborate enumeration of the areas in which peace-keeping could be applied.
