NEW DELHI: Former Planning Commission member V. Krishnamurthy, one of the prime accused in the securities scam, is a relaxed man now, His tormentors are on the run.

Krishnamurthy was jailed along with his son Chandra. This was trumpeted as the firm resolve of the Rao Government to deal firmly with those involved in the scam.

Krishnamurthy consistently maintained that he was being made a scapegoat lo cover up the involvement of bigger people. “My stand has been vindicated,” was his reaction to Harshad Mehta’s disclosure at the press conference that he had paid Rs 1 crore to Prime Minister Narasimha Rao. According to him, both the Government and CBI had this information at the same time when he was arrested. But to cover it up, the Prime Minister’s Office and CBI conspired to make him the villain behind the scam. The charge against Krishnamurthy was that his son’s company got Rs 37 lakh from the big bull. He maintained that this was a loan taken with the full knowledge of the company’s board.
