KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress strode iopower winning simple majority in the first multiparty elections in three decades paving the way for restoration of democracy in the Himalayan kingdom.

Shrugging off an earlier communist challenge the party bagged 103 seats out of the 194 results declared so far in a house of 205 officials of the secretariat of the Nepali congress told PTL Nepali congress cruised lo power after overcoming initial reverses including the shock defeat of its leader and prime minister Dr Krishna Prasad Bhattarai when Tara Bhatt a central council member annexed the 103rd seat.

The United Communist Party of Nepal Marxist Leninist (UCPN) whose candidate beat Dr Bhattarai in Kathmandu has emerged as the largest opposition party winning 66seati in the lower house in the bicameral legishiture
