NEW YORK, N.Y: A Kirtan Darbar was held at the Sikh Cultural Society in Richmond Hill here on Nov 19. The evening’s function is a part of the traditional program in this Gurdwara of commemorating the birth anniversary of the founder of Sikhism Guru Nanak Dev Ji it was, as usual, very well attended by people from this tri-state region.

The Gurdwara sahib organizes a Kirtan Darbar in which Shabads or hymns are sung by prominent ragis. These Kirtan Darbars are held a week before the Baisakhi day on which Guru Gobind Singh Ji founded the Khalsa and a week before the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dey Ji.

Giani Gurdip Singh, the head priest of the Gurudwara Sahib performed the Kirtan. The ragi jathas of Bhai Bhagwan Singh, Bhai Amir Singh, Bhai Daya Singh, Bhai Bawa Singh and Bhai Inderjit Singh also participated in the Kirtan Darbar. Each Jatha rendered the kirtan for half an hour and the program which started at nine p.m. lasted past midnight.
