CHANDIGARH, India ;Mandeep Singh Chehru, Alias General Hari Singh, General of Khalistan Commando Force, and Major Baldev Singh Ghuman, were arrested late night from the residence of Major Baldev Singh in Buta Mundy in Jullundur on August 9. One of the leading freedom fighters, Mandeep Singh carried a reward of one lakh rupees on his head; He was one of the 38 freedom fighters on the most wanted list, prepared by the Punjab police. A close associate of late Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, Mandeep Singh was in the inner security ring of Sant, Police forces say three others, Tarlochan Singh, Charanjit Singh and Gurdial Singh were nabbed from Dhanwal village in Jullundur district on the basis of information gathered from two freedom fighters during the interrogation. At the instance of arrested freedom fighters, the security forces have also recovered a large of quantity of ammunition. This included one light machine gun, one self-loading rifle, three rifles, two muskets, one spring field rifle and one revolver. The police have also recovered more than thousand rounds of various calibers. Mr. J.S. Rebreed. Director General of Police declined to identify the officers who led the raiding party which captured freedom fighters for security reasons. He commended the Jullundur police for the commendable work done by it. Mandeep Singh headed a powerful group of the freedom fighters, which was involved in numerous crimes. He is believed to be the man who led the group which killed three police men in Jull under court.
