CHANDIGARH: Sikh militant Balwinder Singh, deputy chief of the Khalistan Commando Force (Panjwar), killed in Faridkot district last week.

In an encounter, the security forces gunned down Bawinder Singh, responsible for the killing of more than 250 persons, including two dozen policemen, near Jhurar village in Faridkot district.

Ferozepore Range DIG Bakshi Ram told newsmen at Faridkot that on atip off, the security forces laid an ambush on the Abohal canal near Jhurar village. However, when Balwinder Singh sensed a police trap, he tried to escape towards Radda Tibba village. The Security forces chased him and killed him after engaging him in an encounter which lasted about an hour.

The slain militant was active in Tarn Taran, Khadoor Sahib, Majitha, Kapurthala and the Terai region of Uttar Pradesh.

The DIG said the slain militant had recently killed 11 persons in Pilibhin and three in Milani village in Lakhempur Kher in Uttar Pradesh, He was responsible for the Killing of the family of policemen near Rayya and Baba Bakala, He was also responsible for the killing of a close relative of Punjab minister Master Jagir Singh.

Militants ambushed a police party escorting a militant identified as Vijay Kumar, alias Gurmej Chand, after the recovery of arms near Mananwala village in Batala police district. In the ensuing encounter, Vijay Kumar was killed when he tried to escape.
