LONDON, Dec. 15, Reuter: today deported a independence leader who was acquitted on explosives ‘charges but whom the government said could pose a security risk.
About 20 supporters of Amanullah Khan, Chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, bade him farewell as he left Heathrow Airport for Karachi.
Khan, detained since his arrest in September, 1985, was acquitted tact September but the Home Office (Interior Ministry) immediately served him with the deportation order, saying his continued presence in Britain was not conducive to the public good.
Lawyers for Khan, whose group wants independence for Kashmir from India and Pakistan, fought unsuccessfully to have the order over turned.
“It is an unjust decision by the British government to appease the Indian government”, Abdul Rehman, the Front’s General Secretary told reporters at the airport.
