With better teams like those from Bihar and Orissa knocked out, the match never rose to great heights. ‘Adding to that was the fact that the Lucknow team, decidedly the better of the two in skill and technique, was completely off color.
As a matter of fact the Jullundur team, which led 1Oat halftime, never found its defence seriously threatened. The pressure by Sports School was a ‘sustained one with three penalty corners coming their way in the first 20, minutes:
The 23rd minutes found the Lucknow: team making the only worthwhile attempt in which a cross from ‘Chandeqit Singh found the ball going ‘out via Sajiet’s stick.
But the Jullundur pressure on the Lucknow defence could not be denied for long. Following a corner in the 26th minute, Rupinder Deep Singh gave a pass to Baljit Singh (Jr.) who
Took possession of the ball at the top of the circle, cut through two defenders and let fly into the roof of the net.
A the pressure continued after the change of ends, the Lucknow boys began to lose their cool and Rizwan Khan received the yellow card treatment from umpire Harbans Singh midway through the session.
The Jullundur boys had forced two more penalty corners meanwhile. The sixth in the 53rd minute found Rajinder Singh in his element as his powerful show literally went climbing over sprawling custodian Chander Shekhar into the goal. Sports School forced their seventh penalty corner three minutes later and Rajinder Singh ‘was there again to send the ball in like a cannon shoot.
The Jullundur boys walked away with a cash prize of Rs. 1 Jakh, Runners up Lucknow Sports College received Rs, 60.000. The losing semifinalists are to get Rs, 30.000 each and the coach of the Jullundur team Rs. 5,000, the six most talented boys in the tournament will receive Rs, 10,000 each, All this amount has been given by Hindustan Antibiosis for the promotion of hockey
