NEW DELHI: The Center is seriously considering a proposal to hold elections in Jammu and Kashmir before July 18, after which President’s rule in the state can only be extended through a constitutional amendment.

According to top state government sources, the matter is being discussed at the highest level.

The sources said if fresh electoral rolls were not ready on time, the poll could be held on the basis of the existing rolls to complete the election process before the expiry of the July 18 deadline.

They said the government, however, was keeping its options open in this regard.
