SRINAGAR: The arrest of key JKLF leaders last week though a body blow to the organisation does not appear to have much impact on the freedom movement in Kashmir. Had these arrests been made five months ago, observers feel, the effort would have been devastating. The JKLF then was in the forefront of the movement.
All other militant organization except Jamait E Islami, Hizbul Mujahideen were little heard of but in June several proPakistan bodies shot into prominence with successful attacks against security forces, These bodies have infiltrated the secretariat.
The Hizbul Mujahideen is said to the biggest and best equipped militant body. Its activists have attacked army installations and conveys.
Legends are still being woven around the AL Omar supremo Mushtaq Ahmed Sargar who is ‘one of the five leaders behind the insurgency. The others are Hamid, Ashfaq, Yaseen and Javed.
