New Delhi, (PTI) Ram Jethmalani a Janata Dal member of the Rajya sabha (upper house), has retired from the contest for presidential elections. The decision was announced by Pradyumna Badheka, general secretary of the Dal at a news conference. The JD general secretary said in a statement that Jethmalani had retired from the contest in response to friday appeal by the party president S R Bommai.
Welcoming the ‘noble gesture’ of Jethmalani, the party general secretary said it would result in a purposeful electoral fight’ between the two main ‘candidates for the president’s office. Jethmalani section will ‘contribute to the strengthening of the JD as-also of opposition ‘unity,’ he said.
