The Congress (I) has spent in the past two weeks at least Rs 4.5 crore on the purchase of 350 jeeps for the 1989 elections. Each vehicle has cost Rs 1.3 lakh to Rs 1.4 lakh.

Purchases, have been made under different names. More jeeps are being purchased in the names of candidates. The Congress (I) fleet will comprise over 1200 jeeps. Each of the 450 Congress (I) candidates will get three jeeps.

The jeeps already bought are parked in Delhi on the lawns of the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Trust at 12 Willington Crescent or in the compound of the AICC General Secretary Oscar Fernandes well-guarded 3 Kushka Road residence.
