PATIALA: The designated jathedar of the Akal Takht, Jathedar Ranjit Singh, has supported the steps undertaken by the acting Jathedar, Prof Manjit Singh, for forging unity among the two rival Akali actions, Akali Dal (Amritsar) and Akali Dal (Badal).
Jathedar Ranjit Singh, who is detained in Tihar Jail, is disturbed ‘over the Akalis’ involvement in factional fights and who have hardly done anything for the release of the thousands of the Sikh youths detained in various jails of Punjab and in other states.
The Jathedar, who still has to undergo two and a half year imprisonment at Tihar jail for various ‘executions including the, case of the assassination of Nirankari chief Baba Gurbachan Singh, expressed these views to Kanwar Manjit Singh, editor of the weekly magazine, “Punjab Today.”
Kanwar Manjit Singh said that the jathedar had taken serious note of the “wrong reports’ appearing in various papers regarding his meeting with Prof Manjit Singh.
Meanwhile, three professors of Punjabi University here, expressed disassociation with the seminar on Akali unity organized by the Ludhiana based Punjabi Sabha har Manch (PSM) held on December 17.
A news item in the Indian Express had said that Prof Gurbhagat Singh, head of the department of English; Prof Kehar Singh, head of the department of Political Science’ and Prof Balkar Singh, head of the department of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Studies, would also participate in the Sikh unity seminar.
