CALCUTTA(PTI): Japan will extend financial assistance of Rs eight billion to India for setting up of Bakreswar thermal power project in East Indian state of west Bengal.

Consul general of Japan here, Masuji Yamamoto Oct. 14 said the “Exchange of notes” in this regard would be signed between the two governments sometime in November or December. The entire amount would be released in phases with a condition that it would be paid back within 30 years under a “low rate interest scheme.”

The consul general said that the government of India did not approach his government for any financial loan for projects including budge power plant and Balagar power unit in this state. Yamamoto, who was present at the signing ceremony of the grant-in-aid contract for ‘primary health: Center project” of the society for Advancement of Village Environment(SA VE) for Howrah distinct, said that the ministry of foreign affairs of Japan had earmarked 70,000 US dollars for funding such projects in India every year.

Special stress would be laid on such projects in west Bengal, Bihar, Orissa this year, he said.

The consul general said that the Grant for the project amounting to 31,495 US dollars would be give a under the “Smail Seale Grant Assistance scheme” (SSGA) of the Government of Japan. Yamamoto and Karoona Kanar, secretary, save, signed the contract here.
