NEW DELHI: Justice M.C Jain who recently retired as the chief justice of Delhi High Court is likely to head a new judicial commission to probe a possible larger conspiracy leading to the assassination of former Indian premier Rajiv Gandhi official sources said Tuesday.
The name of Justice Jain who retired last month has been suggested by the Chief Justice of India Ranganath Misra.
Earlier the interior ministry had written to Justice Misra requesting him to nominate a judge for the purpose. The letter was sent to the chief justice after the clearance of the law ministry.
The decision to set up the second commission was taken after Justice J S Verma inquiring into the security lapses at Sriperumbudur near Madras on May 21 night did not agree to expanding the scope of his inquiry to include the conspiracy aspect the sources said The verma commission would continue to probe the security lapses they said.
