BOMBAY: Ismat Chughiai, Doyen of Urdu writers and an indomitable campaigner for Justice for women, did at her residence here Thursday after a protracted illness. She was 80 .She was cremated at the Chandanwadi crematorium as per her wish Her family members, including two daughters, Seema Sawhany and Sabrina Lateef, and grandson Ashish were present at the crematorium.
Her husband, Shahid Lateef noted film producer and director, died in 1967.
- Chugiai was born into a middle class family and was the youngest of six brothers and four sisters.
Her short stories brought her fame as much as they enriched the Urdu literature.
Her novel “Tedhi Lake”, was acclaimed as 2 landmark in the history of Urdu literature, while ““Lihaaf” written in 1942 created controversy with readers and critics alike openly and un equivocally condemning her and her story.
She also contributed scraps to a number film, including “Garam Hava” and”sone ki chidia”.
