BOMBAY: Legal luminaries have urged the Government to hold a public trial of Prof Dalip Singh, Jagmohan Singh, Simranjeet Singh Mann and Atinder Pal Singh arrested in October last under TADA.
In a joint statement issued here on June 24 Narendra Nathwani, V.M Tarkunde, H.M Seervai, M.A Rane and Atul Setalvad said the Government had not been able to produce prima facie evidence against those held in spite of the completion of investigation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in January 1989. The signatories felt the detentions were unjustifiable and pleaded for a public trial, A basic requirement in all civilized societies governed by the rule of law.
It may be recalled that Prof Dalip Singh and others were arrested on charges of planning a wage war against the state and for delivering arms to. terrorists in Punjab in October last.
