GAITHERSBURG, VA: The third symposium organized by the Washington Sikh Center and Sri Hemkunt Foundation for Sikh children was held on March 24, 1990 at the Unity Christ Church; Central Avenue, Gaithersburg MD. This symposium had the following objectives,
—To make the children aware of the Sikh tradition;
— To instill a spirit of healthy competition;
— To acquaint them with Sikh history and philosophy;
— To imbibe in them a sense of pride in Sikh values;
— To make them feel that we, the parents, and the Sikh community, care about them in their pursuits to learn more about themselves, Sikhism and Sikh issues; and
— To hope that they will become better Sikhs and better members of the community. ” Three age groups, 710, 1114, and 1518 took part. Each child was allotted 57 minutes to present his/her report. Each group had a different book/ source material to report on. The specific questions to be answered were conveyed to the registrants. A panel of three judges evaluated each report. All participants received trophies. The finalists in groups IT and III shall participate in the next stage of the competition where children from other nearby zones will compete in May. The winners of the zonal competition will meet the finalists from other zones in the U.S., Canada, and England in New York in July, 1990. Winners of the final competition will receive gold medals and trophies,
The three judges at this contest were Dr. J.S. Bakshi, Dr. Nau Nihal Singh Grewal and Dr. Manmohan Singh Kumar. Scores from the three judges were tallied to arrive at the finalists by Professor Gurdeep Singh Bawa and Dr. Lakhbir Singh. Dr, Jagjit Singh Khalsa, Senior Scientist, National Institute of Drug Abuse and Consultant FDA was the chief guest.
