NEW DELHI: Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland has won the 1988 Indira Gandhi peace prize.

The announcement was made by Vice President Shanker Dayal Sharma, the chairman of the jury for the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development, the Press Trust of India reported.

Sharma said Mrs. Brundtland was chosen for “her dedicated endeavors to improve the living conditions of this planet, especially her work as chairman of the World Commission on Environment and Development.”

The award, which carries a cash prize of about $100,000, was instituted in 1986; it has been awarded to Parliamentarians global Action, an international disarmament group, and to Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev.

The international jury includes former Tanzanian President JuiIius Myerere, former Austrian chancellor Bruno Kriesky, US. scientist Jonas Salk, Soviet academician A.P.Aleksandroy, violinist Yehudi Menuhin and former Egyptian foreign Minister Mohammed Zayyat.
