NEW DELHI: United Kingdom to finalize an agreement on extradition and confiscation of property of those found involved in militant activity”.
This decision was taken Thursday morning following a broad: agreement on the subject when the visiting foreign secretary of the United Kingdom Douglas Hurd called on the Union Home minister S.B.Chavan United Kingdom Dr.L-M.Singhvi the Home Secretary Dr.M.Godbole and the Special Secretary V.K-Jain also attended the 40-minute meeting.
The agreement on extradition and confiscation of property of those found involved in militant activities was a sequel to the meeting between Chavan and the British Home Secretary Kenneth Baker when he visited India earlier this month.
An official spokesman said Hurd stressed the importance of sharing information on militants and drug-related problems. He also assured his country’s full cooperation in this regard.
The situation in Punjab Assam and Jammu and Kashmir too came up for discussion According to the spokesman Hurd said it was good that the government of India had decided to bold elections in Punjab. This would help in restoring normalcy in the state.
On Assam Hurd was happy 10 note that there was cessation of the security forces and volunteers of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) He hoped that the talks would help restore peace and normalcy in the north eastern state.
While admitting that both the United Kingdom and India had militant problems Hurd said that there were no human rights violations 3s alleged by some groups in Kashmir Chavan assured Hird that the Indian system was strong enough to ensure this and also gave notice that human rights violations were prosecuted and punished.
