NEW DELHI, India: Indian troops have captured the headquarters of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam at Kapay North, just outside Jaffna, state-owned All India Radio reported, adding a large quantity of arms and ammunition had been seized.
Earlier news said Tamil Tiger rebels trapped in their northern Sri Lankan Lair ignored on Friday calls to surrender as Indian troops, armour and artillery closed in.
Civilian residents, bereft of food, water, medical supplies and other necessities, were streaming out of besieged Jaffna town, an Indian official said, and plans were being made to drop food by air to some areas.
The Indian High Commission (Embassy) official said the 6,000 troops were advancing on the rebel stronghold, brushing back heavy resistance of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
Indian forces had been advancing through the Jaffna Peninsula since last Saturday to disarm the Tigers and force acquiescence with an Indo Sri Lankan accord ending a four year old Tamil separatist war.
