COLOMBO, March 4, Reuter: Indian soldiers killed four Tamil rebels and captured another during a search operation in North Sri Lanka, military official said on Friday.
They said rebels from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eeelam (LTTE) separatist group fought a gun battle on Thursday while trying to escape a “search and cordon” by the Indian army in Urumpirai in Jaffna Peninsula.
Four Tiger rebels were killed, a fifth was arrested and one Indian soldier was injured.
About 50,000 Indian soldiers were sent to the Island’s northern and Eastern provinces to implement an Indian Sri Lankan accord to end a Tamil rebellion.
In the Eastern District of Trincomalee, about 15 armed men suspected to be Tiger guerrillas attempted to enter Mahadiwulwewa village on Thursday but left when fire upon by Sri Lankan soldiers.
Mahadiwulwewa is a few miles away from Morawewa village where the military says 15 people were massacred on Wednesday by Tiger rebels disguised in army uniforms.
