CHANDIGARH: Radio and Televisions Newscast make a calculation effort to give importance to the members of the government and the ruling Congress (I) party, says a study of the official media commissioned by the Editor’s Guild’ of India. There is no doubt that right from the information Minister downwards all news controllers, officials, professionals, news directors and pressure groups want to prove their loyalty and dependability by bringing into lime light and by giving publicity to whomsoever is in power are known to be influential with the powerful. The study entitled “News Coverage and Values in official Media” States, besides AIR newscasts, Tele ‘News casts seem to give the impression of normal life as usual. When there is an accident or a calamity, it’s seriousness and impact are played down, This can be misleading. The study which also covered four Newspapers, Indian Express Times of India, The Hindustan Times and The Patriot, says that doings of the ruling class are a major concern of News gathering and News dissemination. This has resulted in the development of the media by the Elite and for the Elite. The study contends that there is an obsession with politics in the news media, both official and non-official. While they have served well the sources of political developments, they have failed in educating the masses.
