NEW DELHL India, Jan. 17 Reuter: Police shot dead ‘a man and two women in the north sastern town of Darjeeling during protests by Gurkha separatists, the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency reported today.
Police opened fire last night after member of the Gurkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) blocked roads and attacked police in protest at the arrest of 35 GNLF supporters.
Dozens of people have been killed in the tea growing hills of Darjeeling, West Bengal state, since Gurkhas started a campaign for autonomy there 10 months ago. The Nepal speaking Gurkhas form 90 per cent of the population in the area which borders Nepal, but they are a minority in the mainly Bengali speaking state.
