Washington: (PTI) The presence of an Indian nuclear submarine could destabilize the Indian ocean, the U.S. State Departmentsays, the Soviet lease of a nuclear submarine to India has also raised questions about Soviet motivations because an Indian nuclear submarine force could destabilize the Indian Ocean and is inconsistent with Soviet support for an Indian Ocean zone of peace.
The report approvingly quotes a Sri Lankan newspaper’s view that even if the western powers with draw from the Indian Ocean the nuclear threat would remain because the Indian Ocean would be within the range of Soviet Missiles.
