NEW DELHI: Strangely even an Indian central minister’s telephone is being tapped by intelligence agencies, Human resources development minister Arjun Singh told newsmen that he had written a letter to the prime minister seeking an enquiry into his charge that the Intelligence Bureau was bugging his telephone and his house was under surveillance. “Circumstances exist which necessitate a credible, fair and conclusive enquiry into the matter,” he said. The issue was raised by Indian Parliament by former Prime Minister Chander Shekhar who demanded an enquiry. “Let the enquiry committee be headed by leader of the opposition L.K Advani,” Janata Dal spokesman Hari Kishore Singh demanded a house committee or an enquiry by the Lok Sabha Speaker, Singh said that tapping of telephones of political leaders on account of differences was reprehensible and was an antithesis of democracy. There was a strong uproar in the upper house of the Indian parliament with members denouncing Prime Minister Rao for bugging Arjun Singh’s telephone. But the charge was denied by home minister Chavan, The home minister Said that it was a matter between the prime minister and the human resources minister. The opposition members took exception to the statement saying that if a central minister was not spared by the intelligence agencies what could be the fate of members of parliament.
