NEW DELHI: The government recently reiterated its commitment not 1o sign the nuclear nonproliferation treaty (NPT) despite persuasion by certain foreign _ dignitaries.

The Foreign Minister, Dinesh Singh, told S.S.Razi, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, that the Prime Minister in his meetings with the former President of the USA, George Bush, Prime Minister Mivazawa of Japan, Prime Minister John Major of the UK, President Yeltsin of the Russian federation and Chancellor Kohl of the Federal Republic of Germany had explained government’s principled position on this issue.

He said India believed that the NPT in its present form was discriminatory and attempts at creating a permanent division between the nuclear haves and have not’s.
