NEW DELHI: N Korean decision to pull out of the NPT has been widely welcomed by the Indian govt. Stating that the withdrawal from the NPT is well justified as every nation had its own sovereign right to take appropriate measures for its own defense preparations. Indian foreign minister on March 24 said India too will not sign the NPT despite persuasion by many foreign dignitaries who had revenue visited the country.

The Indian Prime Minister, P.V.Narsimha in his meetings with the German Chancellor Helmut Kohl and Japanese Premier Miyazama explained the position of the India’s stand on the issue. The present nuclear nonproliferation treaty is discriminatory and attempts to create a permanent division between the nuclear powers and the nonnuclear ones. In view of this the Indian administrations have appreciated the N Korean withdrawal from the NPT. The stand of Hindu fundamentalists belonging to the BJP is well known on this issue, Advani and Joshi the senior of the Party have openly advocated going nuclear and advocated cooperation with Israel in the respect to make India a strong nuclear power.

North Korean vice-president Li Jong on Friday explained to prime minister P.V_Narasimha Rao the circumstances that led to his country withdrawing from the controversial nuclear Nonproliferation (NPT).

The Indian side noted that North Korea’s action in withdrawing from the NPT was its sovereign decision.

The Indian side felt that the 1995 review of the NPT would provide an opportunity for the amendments necessary to give it universal and nondiscriminatory character like the chemical weapon convention. A universal character of the treaty was essential for achieving progress towards genuine nonproliferation.

An extremely affairs ministry spokesman told newsmen that North Korea was told that reunification of Korea would be a very important positive factor for world peace and particularly for peace and stability in the Asian region.
