NEW DELHI: The Union Home Minister, S.B. Chavan, has said that the government may introduce a compulsory legislation that will give the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) more powers to probe serious criminal cases without the consent of state governments.

“Of the serious cases that are being investigated, only one per cent is with the CBI. The rest 99% are with state governments. In some cases the state governments even refuse to cooper- ate with the Center,” Chavan said intervening at the end of a eight-and- a-half hour debate on the Vohra Committee report on the nexus between politicians and criminals here last week in the Lok Sabha.

The resolution was later adopted by a voice vote.

The marathon debate which was marked by clashes between members of different parties, rarely took names and several members were of the opinion that the motion moved by Janata Dal’s Ram Vilas Paswan, itself was mild enough for even the ruling party to support it.

The Home Minister said that in order to curb this nexus, the legal sys- tem will also have to be changed. “Number of courts have to be constituted in which procedures will have to be simplified for prosecution so that.
