NEW DELHI (PTI): The Liberalization of India economy and the emerging globalization of market mechanism have thrown a “big challenge” before Indian railways to bring about massive structural changes to benefit passengers, according to a top German railway official here.

Dr.Peter Hafner, Director of German railways, said this here Nov.10 while giving a presentation on the German railway to the committee of restructuring Indian railways.

The committee headed by Prakash Tendon, set up in July this year, is expected to submit its report to the Indian government by January next.

Dr. Hafner said German railways were being managed as a true business enterprise (joint stock Corporation) to get more of the passenger traffic onto the rail.
