NEW DELHI (PTI): India’s Premier P.V Narasimha Rao recently ruled out signing the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) now as it was going to be reviewed in 1995,

“The NPT is discriminatory and it did not say there will be no nuclear weapons after a particular period on the face of the earth which is what we stand for,” Rao told members while intervening during question hour in the Rajya Sabha.

“The NPT in its present form is not going to continue and it is coming under review. Therefore there is no point in my signing it now or anyone signing it now. It The NPT was discriminatory for the simple reason that under the NPT there was every possibility of some nation remaining a nuclear power, acquiring more nuclear weapons, while majority of the human kind and many other nations would not be able to do so, Rao said.

“Therefore nations in whose possession the power exists will always have a say totally disproportionate to reason on a particular issue and totally disproportionate to realities and democratic functioning of the world as we look at it,” he said.
