By Our Correspondent STOCKHOLM: India accounted for a major share of the Soviet arms exports last year, a study of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute said.

The Soviet Union was the largest exporter of the arms in the world, It accounts for 36 percent of the world trade in 1988 with more than 75% of its shipments going to Angola, Cuba, India, Iraq, Syria and Lybia.

The United States commanded 29% of the world’s arms trade. It exported arms mainly to Egypt, Israel, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and South Korea.

India and Japan had become the big spenders of arms in Asia instead of the Middle East the report said.
