NEW DELHI, India, April 14, Reuter: India hailed the signing on Thursday of accords for a Soviet pullout from Afghanistan, saying they would lessen tensions in South Asia.

“As a country of the region, India feels that the accords will lead to a lessening of tensions in the region and the removal of the Raison O’Etre for the induction of sophisticated weapons into the area,” an External Affairs statement said.

“India will make every effort to promote these objectives”.

India has been critical of the supply to its archrival Pakistan of USS. Weapons and has expressed the hope that this arms flow would be lessened as the Soviet presence is reduced.

India, whose main arms supplier is the Soviet Union, has never condemned the presence of the Soviet troops in Afghanistan.
