VALMIKINAGAR (INDONEPAL BORDER) (PTI): India on Nov.12 agreed to give 850 CUSEC water to Nepal from the Don canal every day.
The agreement was reached at the end of a two-day meeting between the irrigation minister of Nepal Laxman Prasad Ghimire and water resources minister of Bihar Jagadanand Singh here.
Briefing newsmen after the meeting the engineer-in chief of the state irrigation department Shailendra Kumar Sinha said as per the agreement the supply of 850 CUSEC water to Nepal everyday would start on January 10, 1993 after desolation of the eastern canal at a cost of about Rs two crore.
According to an agreement reached between the two countries in 1959 India was to give 850 CUSEC water to Nepal daily. But following damage to the canal in 1986-87 water could not be given for nearly four years. From 1991 Nepal was given 700 CUSEC of water after the canal was repaired.
