ANKARA (PTI): India and Turkey on July 16 expressed determination to work together to face challenges of religious extremism which have emerged in the post-cold war world.
Speaking at a banquet he gave in honor of the visiting Indian president Dr, Shankar Dayal Sharma, Turkish president Suleyman Demirel said Turkey was outraged by the recent acts of terrorism in Bombay and condemned violence and terrorism in all forms.
Like India, Demiral said “Turkey 1s determined to fight terrorism within the parameters of democracy and the rule of law.”
Demirel said terrorism, which crushed all human rights, could not be justified under any pretext.
Both Dr Sharma and Demirel referred to the principles of secularism and democracy being pursued by India and Turkey. “This common feature of our states constitutes a firm basis to further develop and strengthen our cooperation,” Demirel said.
The two presidents referred to the free market economic policies pursued by India and Turkey and said this could pave the way to the deepening, diversification and enlargement of economic cooperation between the two countries, which stood at a modest level.
