LONDON, Jan 24, Reuter: Inderjit Singh Reyat accused of making a bomb which killed two baggage handlers at Tokyo’s Narita Airport in 1985 lost a court battle on Tuesday to avoid extradition to Canada.
Three high court judges ruled unanimously that Inderjit Singh Reyat, 35, who is wanted in Canada to face charges in connection with the bombing, was validly committed to prison last August to await extradition.
The Canadian government says the bomb was placed in a Canadian pacific aircraft from Vancouver and was being transferred at Narita to an Air India flight bound for Bombay when it exploded.
During a five-day hearing, the judges heard that Reyat was wanted in Canada on charges of manslaughter causing an explosion and making and possessing explosives substances between May and June 1985.
A fragment of a radio tuner said to have been bought by Reyat at a store in Duncan, British Columbia, was found in the debris after the bomb went off at Tokyo, the Court was told,
Reyat, an Indianbom electrician who lived with his wife and family in the central English town of Coventry, was arrested last February on his way to work at the Jaguar car factory.
He came to Britain after being initially released by the Canadian authorities because of lack of evidence.
Reyat’s lawyers who told the court there were insufficient grounds to jail him, said they would consider seeking permission to appeal after the judges gave their reasons for the decision.
