Yeltsin’s reception is sure to be much less controversial in South Korea, his second stop on his northeast Asian tour. Russian trade with South Korea jumped 35% last year, even though official relations weren’t established until December 27,1991. The Koreans are grateful to Russia for cutting off all economic and military aid to North Korea. The decision to recognize Seoul, made under President Mikhail Gorbachev, helped create conditions for this month’s announcement that China and South Korea will recognize each other officially.
