BALTIMORE, MD: A Sikh youth Pawittar Singh aged 21 from Punjab, India was granted asylum in September last, by Immigration Judge Honorable John J. Me Carrick at Baltimore, Maryland Pawittar Singh who was placed in exclusion and deportation proceedings upon arrival at Washington Dulles airport. He claimed that he was persecuted in India by the Indian Government being a Sikh and a member of All India Sikh Student Federation. The police arrested and detained him on many occasions. He was severely beaten by the police and was tortured; He had to flee from India to save his life. He sought asylum in the United States,
According to his Attorney Hamam Singh Ameja, Honorable Judge McCarrick in a well-reasoned summary decision admitted Singh as a refugee with immediate effect. Immigration and Naturalization Service waived their right to appeal.
