NEW DELHI: Syed Abdullah Bukhari, the religious head (Iman) of Delhi’s most important mosque, the Jama Masjid, Saturday announced his support for the opposition Janata Dal in the coming general elections, saying there was “unprecedented corruption, and confrontation between members of different communities” during the Congress (I) party’s rule in the past five years, PTI reports

“I pray to God to guide us to elect a government which may safeguard the secular democratic foundations of our society”, a statement by the Iman, read out by his son Naib Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari at a press conference here, said. The Imam could not attend the press conference, as he was “indisposed”.

In the statement, people have been urged to either vote for the Left Front or any other “secular minded” candidate where there is no nominee of the five party op position National Front of which the Janata Dal is the chief Constituent, with a view to defeating the Congress (I) and the rightwing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
