This is a collection of affidavits sworn in by scientists, farmers, journalists, advocates, professors and other professionals of Chandigarh and Punjab narrating their personal experiences viz-a-viz the Indian State. These affidavits were intended originally to be filed with a U.S. court trying the India-initiated extradition case against Ranjit Singh Gill (Kuki) and Sukhminder Singh Sandhu (Sukhi). Most affidavits were filed at the time of a visit to Chandigarh of defence counsel, Ms Mary Pike and Mr.Ronald Kuby (October, 1987).
The defence team was not allowed to enter Punjab by the Indian Government. Obviously, more serious cases of the human rights violations in Punjab have been left uncovered. Almost all the affected deponents suffered at the hands of the Indian State rather marginally. Nevertheless, the collection throws light on how the Indian State deals with mere dissenters and critics or those who were related to the youths involved in the armed struggle in Punjab. The reader of the collection may arrive at their own conclusions about the real nature and character of the Indian State today.
