NEW DELHI: Union Minister of State for Tourism Ms Usha Sinha resigned from the ruling Janata Dal (S) and joined the Congress I saying only Rajiv Gandhi could provide stability and uphold the country’s integrity.
Sinha told newsmen at the AICC headquarters here she has tendered her resignation to the prime minister for forwarding it to president R Venkataraman. AICC general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad said that Ms Sinha who had won the 1989 election to the lower house of Parliament from Vaishali in Bihar had unconditionally joined the party.
Sinha was the deputy minister for child welfare in the V P Singh Government before she had switched to the JD (S).
The speaker of the Haryana Assembly Harminder Singh Chatha whose disqualification of three JD (S) MLAs led to a political crisis in the state and subsequent imposition of president’s rule also joined the Cong-I.
Former Haryana Chief Minister Bhajan Lal said that a former state minister Brij Mohan had also joined the Cong-I.
Sinha regrets leaving the Cong1 to join the Janata Dal in 1987 Ms Sinha is the fifth senior non-Cong (I) leader who were either ministers in the V P Singh government or the Chandra Shekhar ministry to join the Cong-I in recent weeks. The other was Anil Shastri Nathu Ram Mirdha V C Shukla and Jagdeep Dhankar.
