ONTARIO: The World Sikh Organization, with cooperation from the Ottawa Sikh Society, hosted a demonstration at Parliament Hill for protest the continuing human Rights abuses perpetrated against minorities in India.
Many Canadians with origins in India have experienced the wrath of the Indian Government’s draconian law and practices, or have witnessed the suffering of their loved ones. Such continual suffering at the hands of governmental forces transcends geographical boundaries and affects all the communities in the world today who strive for basic freedoms and fundamental rights of the individual. Canada is no exception.
Since S.B. Chavan, the Home Minister of India is visiting Canada, and since the Home Minister is directly responsible for continuing to implement and enforce legislation that is contrary to the United Nations Charter of Human Rights, for which both India and Canada are signatories, it is imperative that the Canadian government take affirmative action in diplomatic relations with India to end the continual abuse of justice in India.
Canadians entreat the Canadian government to obtain a binding agreement from India that would effectively cease these state crimes against humanity, and revise ¢existing laws and practices to enshrine the rights of all peoples of India, regardless of race, creed, or political orientation. We ask all Honorable Members of the Canadian parliament to pursue the nights of those who cannot speak for themselves.
Data collected by Asia Watch, Amnesty International, and other human rights groups document the Continuing atrocities perpetrated by the Indian Government. Members of the US Congress have made clear their wishes to end these crimes against humanity, we are hoping the Canadian government will follow this lead.
