WASHINGTON, DC: In an effort to preserve an estimated 8,400 jobs in California and $20 million in timber receipt funding to rural schools, Congressman Wally Herger (R-Rio-Oso) has contacted the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee to express his strong opposition to a proposed $65 million reduction in the Forest Service’s 1990 road construction program.

“Our timber communities of northern California are already reeling from the impact of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s proposal to list the northern spotted owl under the Endangered Species Act. A reduction of $65 million in road construction programs will ultimately result in great economic hardship through job loss and lower funding for our local schools,” Herger said.
