NEW DELHI, India: Armed Gurkhas set fire to 14 houses belonging to Communists in northeastern India on Tuesday as a general strike by the separatist Gurkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) paralysed the area, the United News India reported on Wednesday.
The GNLF has called a weeklong strike in the hilly Darjeeling district and reports have said that
Gurkha militants have forced shops and business to close every time they have attempted to reopen.
Some 500 GNLF activists burned down seven houses in the district on Monday following fighting over the weekend with Communists of the Communist Part of India (Marxist) which left one Gurkha dead, Press reports said.
‘The CPI (M) has been vociferous in its opposition to the GNLE campaign and become increasingly involved in clashes.
‘About 50 people have died since the GNLF launched its separatist campaigns in May.
