NEW DELHI: The Indian government said it was ready to hold talks with the people of Kashmir, but not with anyone outside the country.

An official spokesperson said he was clarifying Singh’s remarks to reporters on Kashmir while on his way to Windhoek to attend the Namibian Independence Day celebrations on Wednesday.

The spokesperson said the question put to the prime minister was whether the government would have talks with the militants like Amanullah Khan of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, who was based in Pakistan. To this, the Prime Minister said, “we will talk to the people of Kashmir.”
