New Delhi: The government and major political parties in parliament Wednesday agreed on amending the anti-defection law to avert any confrontation between the legislature and judiciary on implementation of the law relating to defections.

This consensus was reached at a meeting of major parliamentary parties convened by Lok Sabha speaker Shivraj V Pail in the light of the recent Supreme Court ruling.

While upholding the constitutional validity of the anti-defection Jaw (tenth schedule) the Supreme Court had struck down paragraph 7 Of the schedule which takes away the powers of the supreme court and high courts to review the speakers decision disqualifying a legislator.

Wednesdays discussions with paramilitary party leaders assumes significance in the wake of a meeting of presiding officers of state legislatures scheduled next week to consider the imbroglio created by the Manipur assembly speakers ruling on disqualification of legislators despite a supreme court ruling on the issue.
