AMRITSAR: The administration is making efforts to persuade the All-India Sikh Students Federation AISSF President Manjit Singh to accept armed police security.

A senior police official said the AISSF chief who is contesting from the Tam Taran parliamentary and assembly seats is vulnerable target of militants He said the untrained personal guards who accompany Mr Singh would find it difficult to retaliate in case of a militant attack

At present Mr Manjit Singh with a new revolver slung over his shoulder is guarded at a time by a dozen young boys armed with carbines self-loading rifles and 12-bore guns.

Quoting intelligence reports the official said militants in the guise of policemen were likely to make a bid on the life of the federation supremo before the polling date.

Talking about the possible strategy that the militants could adopt the official said they (militants) might lay a naka on the possible route that the AISSF chief might take while going to a particular constituency early in the morning or returning late at night.

In fact the security of the federation chief was discussed at a meeting of senior civil police and paramilitary officials chaired by Government O.P. Malhotra here.
