AMRITSAR: The Punjab Governor, Mr. N.K. Mukharji said here that there was no question of granting general amnesty in Punjab but there was every reason to review the cases of those in jails. As a result of review which was an ongoing process hundreds of persons had been let off he said. The government effort was to rehabilitate them. I was taken aback for the reasons why people were in jail here, he said.

Mukharji was talking to newsmen at the end of his two day visit to the district had also visited Tarn Taran and Goindwal Sahib. He is going around the districts to assess the situation for holding elections at the Assembly and SGPC.

He said the state had long been under President’s rule and this could not last indefinitely but he as Governor would send in his report and state his opinion.

Referring to his visit to Tarn Taran where the CRPF and Punjab Police had exchanged fire, he said he had talked to the local people and got a fair idea of what had happened.
